Accelerated Reader (AR)

Accelerated Reader is a software program that encourages and assesses read alouds and independent reading for our students.  After reading a variety of fiction and nonfiction books, students take short online comprehension quizzes, progressing toward their quarterly goals.

Students receive an assessment grade each quarter in their LEAD (Leadership through Enrichment, Academics, and Design) class for Accelerated Reader.  Our language arts teachers use iReady data to establish a baseline Reading Level Goal for our students as well as a Points Goal at the start of the year.  Every Altona student has a Average Percent Correct goal of 85% or higher, and every student must read a minimum of 1.5 points of nonfiction per quarter.  The AR rubric is a 12-point rubric based on these four requirements; the rubric may be viewed here.

Would you like to keep an eye on your student’s progress in Accelerated Reader?  The parent company, Renaissance Place, has established the HomeConnect portal for your use.  Through HomeConnect, you can choose up to six email addresses to receive updates every time your student quizzes for real-time information.  You will find HomeConnect instructions here.
